Definition: What Is a Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed dental school plus three additional years of advanced training and education in an ADA-accredited prosthodontic graduate program. They specialize in treating and handling dental and facial problems that involve restoring missing tooth and jaw structures. A prosthodontist is highly trained in cosmetics, dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD), and more.

At Cody Dental Group we are focused on providing a safe, comfortable environment lead by Denver’s most respected team of family dentists.

Our Prosthodontist, K. Lee Kuhlke, D.D.S.

K. LEE KUHLKE, D.D.S., M.S., is a Colorado native from Lakewood, Colorado. After serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1968, he attended the University of Colorado in pre-med studies. In 1975, he graduated from Northwestern University Dental School as a Doctor of Dental Surgery.

After dental school, Dr. Kuhlke attended post-graduate studies at the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry where he received a Prosthodontic Specialty Certificate (crowns, bridges and dentures) in 1977. Concurrently, he was enrolled in the University of Iowa Graduate College and was awarded a Master of Science degree in dental materials where he published an original research thesis in 1977.

Dr. Kuhlke was an Assistant Professor at the Baltimore College of Dentistry teaching fixed and removable advanced Prosthodontics. During his tenure at the University of Iowa, Dr. Kuhlke developed a conservative resin retained fixed prosthesis and published the study in 1977. This was further developed at Baltimore and later became known as the Maryland Bridge that is still used worldwide.

When dental implants were introduced to this country in 1982, Dr. Kuhlke became certified in the restorations of implants and has lectured internationally. He has restored over 6,000 implants and is recognized as an authority on implant restorations. He is a member of the American College of Prosthodontics and the Academy of Osseointegration in addition to the American Dental Association and Colorado Dental Association.

Denver’s “5280 Best Dentists” has included Dr. Kuhlke each year since it was published.

Dr. Kuhlke is married to his wife Amy, a UAL flight attendant for 46 years. They have three grown children, an engineer, a teacher and a registered nurse. He is a private pilot and enjoys racing gliders during the summer and is a ski instructor at Vail in the winter.
