The practice of Dentistry from its early beginnings has always been a preventive based profession. Through years of scientific research and evidence-based technology, our profession knows that routine regular preventive visits coupled with treating dental disease in its early stages is not only cost-effective but leads to an overall healthier being.
Dental decay (caries) is the number one chronic illness in the United States today and is the number one reason why children miss school. It is obvious that a child cannot learn effectively in pain. Dental decay is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. Prevention begins at home with proper brushing and flossing as well as a healthy, nutritious diet. In many instances, dental decay can be directly related to the amount of time sugary foods and liquids are in contact with the teeth. In between-meal snacks should consist of such things as fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, and non-sugary liquids (water). As a general rule, the more unprocessed, the better the foodstuff.
Children under the age of 6 usually do not have the manual dexterity to brush and floss efficiently by themselves. We advise that children brush and floss themselves and then a parent repeats the process. Brushing and flossing should become a supervised event once a day. As the children advance in skills, oral hygiene can gradually become their responsibility.
Dental examinations should begin between the ages of 12 to 18 months.
