Colorado’s oldest continually operating dental group still setting the bar
As Coloradans returned home after World War II, Dr. Glenn Cody decided that the only way to serve all the patients in his thriving Denver dental practice was to form a dental group, a highly unusual notion back in 1946. His vision was to provide people access to dental care that would last a lifetime.
Cody’s legacy continues today as Cody Dental Group celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. In honor of the milestone, Cody is donating $60,000 worth of preventive, hygiene and restorative treatments to the residents of Warren Village, a Denver nonprofit that helps families in transition: www.warrenvillage.org.
A look back
Dr. Cody modeled his practice on the Mayo Clinic. General dentists were teamed with specialists to offer patients a full spectrum of care under one roof, and associates were groomed to become full partners. As the collaborative nature of the group evolved, an emphasis on preventive care became its trademark. Today, Cody is the oldest continually operating dental group in Colorado and to our knowledge, in the entire United States.
Glenn Cody founded Cody Dental Group in January 1946 with Harold Harris, Kenneth Grove and Glenn’s son, Bill Cody, who became the group’s children’s dentist. They opened a state-of-the-art building at 16th and Humboldt in 1947. Over the years, the practice featured many prominent Denver dentists, including the pioneering periodontist Bill Hyatt, an innovator in bone grafting techniques.
“There was only one other dental group in Colorado at the time,” said Bill Cody, now 85 and retired. “We wanted to offer the best possible dental care to anyone who needed it all under one roof. I’m proud to say the practice still maintains that mission.”
A look ahead
Now in its seventh decade, the multi-specialty practice has grown to twelve dentists ranging from general and pediatric dentistry to orthodontics, periodontics and oral maxillofacial surgery. Cody offers the full spectrum of dental and restorative procedures, tooth whitening, cosmetic and implant dentistry, orthodontics and the management of jaw disorders.
